We got an email today from the reclaimvs.com campaign.
"Dear Supporter
After publication of a further set of disastrous annual accounts and with accummulated losses now at £12.4 million, news comes today, that VisitScotland is to take the ailing visitscotland.com into public ownership.
A press release has been made and the media can be expected to feast on the news. Many thanks to all our supporters whose efforts have no doubt helped to achieve the eventual result that was desired.

The following statement has been issued by VisitScotland:
"Today we announced that VisitScotland has reached agreement to bring the national tourism website VisitScotland.com back into public ownership. The website, which attracted over 11 million visits in 2007 and has delivered over £65 million in bookings since it was launched, will be brought under the direct control of VisitScotland in a move to allow it to adapt more flexibly to changing consumer trends and tourism industry needs.
The changes will also give VisitScotland more flexibility to assist businesses and to respond to the current economic downturn. As technology advances VisitScotland.com needs to respond to those changes and be able to work with market leaders to deliver a high-quality website that can change and develop quickly.
Changing internet usage and developing consumer trends have meant that the original model developed over six years ago that of a one-stop shop that meets all the customer needs for information, booking and sales now needs to evolve to ensure that VisitScotland.com remains able to fulfil the needs of the Scottish tourism industry in the 21st century.
Following discussions with its partners in the joint venture Tiscover, Partnerships UK and Atos Origin, VisitScotland has reached agreement on the terms of a deal to take control of the operation.
VisitScotland is currently working with the partners to ensure a smooth transition. VisitScotland is committed to ensuring continuity and stability throughout the changes and we will engage fully with VisitScotland.com staff. The website will continue to operate as usual, tourism businesses and consumers will see no immediate change, although the website will continue to evolve and develop over time. Further information on the changes announced today is contained in the attached briefing document. If you have any questions on any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in touch."
Unfortunately, despite the joy of reclaimvs, we still haven't got this right. We should not be subsidizing private companies with public money, then when they still mess up, we bail them out by taking things back into full public ownership.
That's not right. If VisitScotland cannot operate - without subsidy - in the private arena, then they should go into receivership and allow others to provide the set of services they failed to provide. Get the Scottish quangos out of Scottish economic activity; stop the jobs for the boys attitude; stop treating taxpayer money like a personal fiefdom used to benefit a select group of pseudo civil servants. Stop boosting the inflated pensions of the quango meisters and their cronies with our money. We do not need a Visit Scotland and the subsidized competition they provide to a private sector that is struggling to carry them on its shoulders.
How much ?

How much will the taxpayer have to pay here to bail out the private companies who have been subsidized to screw us? I wonder!
